Beartown by Fredrik Backman
“Sometimes life doesn’t let you choose your battles. Just the company you keep.”
Beartown is the third book I’ve read by Fredrik Backman and just like the others (A Man Called Ove and Anxious People), it is engrossing, thought provoking, tragic and beautiful. Fredrik is the consummate storyteller; gifted at making each of his characters 100 percent relatable, even if you don’t agree with them or their actions. The setting of Beartown is a small, Canadian town, deep in the forest. Everything about the town relates to and is centered on hockey, the game itself in all its grace and violence, the players and their family members, the town’s employment, and the hopes and dreams of the entire community. Beartown tells the story of life leading up to the national semi-finals game, a vicious attack that takes place leaving the town divided and in turmoil, and the character’s subsequent actions that ultimately define them. Although it’s a story about a game and a town; remember, 100 percent relatable, it’s even more about friendship, commitment, denial and perseverance.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
What an eccentric and unique book. Although it was published a while ago, this novel does not date. Narrated in the first person from the voice of Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy with high-functioning autism, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time delves into what the world looks like from a different sense of what is “normal”. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, everyday interactions and admonishment have little meaning for Christopher; he lives on patterns, guidelines and a diagram kept in his pocket. Christopher relates well to animals, but not to humans. The very first page of this novel a neighbor’s dog is killed, sending Christopher on an improbable quest to solve the murder mystery and subsequently unearth some difficult family secrets that don’t fit well into Christopher’s carefully constructed universe. This novel, with its humor, honesty, and wisdom is a thought provoking read.
