Hot Lights, Cold Steel is Dr. Michael Collins’ exhilarating, frequently hilarious, sometimes heart wrenching, down-to-earth memoir of his four-year orthopedic residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It is a front-row seat to the grueling, harsh reality of what it takes to become a surgeon. Each chapter is highly animated and rich in encounters both sad and hilarious. Throughout his memoir, Dr. Collins often reflects that he works to be more introspective; yet I believe this book is full of introspection, and a reminder that doctors are just as human as the rest of us. I have never experienced a book like this one in which I would continually have to pause to dry my eyes….be it from tears of total hilarity or tears from total heartbreak. Hot Lights, Cold Steel is a gripping memoir, at times devastating and at times triumphant. This book is compulsively readable and I highly recommend!
