Girls in White Dresses by Jennifer Close
This book is light and fun; an opportunity for a sneak peek into what a possible day-in-the-life might look like for a group of millennials. Focused on the lives of three young women, Isabella, Mary, and Lauren, the pages of Girls in White Dresses are filled with song lyrics, tears, men, weddings, showers, miserable bosses, pets, jobs, and family drama. All of this wrapped up with humorous stories of friendship and lots and lots of cocktail consumption. Although Girls in White Dresses is mostly a comical read, an undertone of honesty and vulnerability can be felt throughout as it carefully captures the mix of dashed hopes, daunting anticipation, poor choices, boredom, and resilience that characterize young adulthood.
Firefly Lane by Kristen Hannah
Firefly Lane is what I consider a “beach read” with a bit of depth added for good measure. It is a drawn-out novel about two main characters Kate and Tully and tells the story of a their life-long friendship and all the ups and downs that inevitably occur throughout more than 30 years of kinship. Different than the first novel I read by Kirsten Hannah, The Nightingale, that absolutely captivated me; Firefly Lane is a bit typical and lackluster. The too-long a tale about Kate and Tully and the ways they grown together then apart, buoy then hurt each other, love then resent each other, and ultimately come to realize it is their friendship alone that sustains each other, has many enjoyable moments. However, the story itself is a bit tedious and the way it is written with its typical friendship peaks and valleys is not unique. For an unchallenging, light but lengthy read, I would recommend.
Hot Lights, Cold Steel by Michael J. Collins, M.D.
Hot Lights, Cold Steel is Dr. Michael Collins’ exhilarating, frequently hilarious, sometimes heart wrenching, down-to-earth memoir of his four-year orthopedic residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It is a front-row seat to the grueling, harsh reality of what it takes to become a surgeon. Each chapter is highly animated and rich in encounters both sad and hilarious. Throughout his memoir, Dr. Collins often reflects that he works to be more introspective; yet I believe this book is full of introspection, and a reminder that doctors are just as human as the rest of us. I have never experienced a book like this one in which I would continually have to pause to dry my eyes….be it from tears of total hilarity or tears from total heartbreak. Hot Lights, Cold Steel is a gripping memoir, at times devastating and at times triumphant. This book is compulsively readable and I highly recommend!
