The Daughter's June Reads

Writer's picture: The DaughterThe Daughter

The Daughter's June reads are here and they are amazing! All books this month rated 4 stars or above!

I know it seems counterintuitive but I always read my scary/dark/thriller/murder mystery books in the summertime so that I don't get so creeped out! I am also indulging in my 450+ page books this month and almost all of these books this month were lengthy. I also have spent so much time out enjoying sun, friends, family, dining out, and just the general splendor of summer so I am not reading at my usual clip.

Buckle up and read on!

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

"Genuine beauty is always quite alarming."

After seeing this book literally everywhere on bookstagrams, I knew I had to read it! Our main character, Richard, finds himself looking back at the past year and replaying what exactly happened during that tragic year. All of the characters in this book are morally corrupt, and in my opinion horrible people, but Tartt's writing makes you want to continue reading. I want to start off by saying I can understand why some people adore dissecting this story, and I can also see why some didn't like this book at all. This book is exceedingly hard to review and decipher. I think to really understand this book, you have to really get on the level at the narrator is describing the events to you. Yes, it is a powerful and disturbing story and Tartt's writing is exceptional. I am torn and would give this book a 4/5 stars. Definitely pick up a copy and let me know what you think!

The Lake House by Kate Morton

My cat, Winston, would not let me take a picture of this book without him.

"A person never forgets the landscape of her childhood."

You all know I am a sucker for books based in Cornwall, England and this book is no exception. Mystery upon mystery in this one! Our main character fluctuates, as well as the narration, however it centers on Alice and Sadie mostly. The former is a well renown author (akin to Agatha Christie) and the latter is a police detective. Both of our characters are deeply involved in national mysteries, and they eventually have their lives intersect. This book is lengthy but I really enjoyed it, and loved the descriptions of gardens and the countryside.
