Alright alright...we know that everyone usually has a strong stance when it comes to romance novels. Sad and thoughtful books will always have a place on my bookshelf, but I knew that I needed to make room for more. I am here to give you my personal 411 on this romance genre.
Take what you like and leave what you don't!
So the two most basic ingredients in a romance novel are 1) a central love story and 2) an optimistic and uplifting ending to the story. Traditionally the core problem directly affects the central romance story. My favorites fall within a variety of the niche subtopics within this genre, but regardless, I do like a romance story every one in awhile. With these stipulations, let's proceed!
I usually reach for a romance storyline when my life is more serious - life changes, big personal decisions, relationship changes, work drama. I know that when I finish a book in this genre, that I will have a rewarding, positive outcome. I mean it is literally build into the storyline! These stories take you on a huge rollercoaster ride but ultimately will never let you down! Love is very powerful!
However, I do agree that more diversity and inclusion needs to be included in this genre, across the board. It needs to happen.
Romance has taught me a lot about my reading tastes, as well as about myself. I always judged people who read romance novels, but after reading many of the classic romance novels, I am a total convert and will NEVER judge anybody's reading preferences again. Additionally, I love that this genre is all about women's voices and the woman's point of view. We need more of this! I also learned that I can accept myself and people will love me no matter what. This genre also taught me how to be a softer, kinder person all around.
So without further ado, here is my favorite's list!
My top romance recommendations:
#1 Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
I mean...how could I not? This is a classic! My classic of choice. I blame Darcy for essentially making me fall for my husband because I am convinced they are the same person. Simply cannot be beat in this specific category and will forever hold the #1 place in my heart.
#2 A Sky Painted Gold by Laura Wood
I cannot begin to tell you just how much this book touched my heart and soul! I am always a sucker for a story set in Cornwall, England but this book is much more than that. Please see my previous reviews on just how much I loved this romance book!
#3 My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier
This is a mystery-romance. So beware if you are adverse to mystery stories. This author is far and away my favorite author EVER and this book has consistently stayed on my favorite reads of all time. Truly exemplary in it's field. Cannot speak highly enough about it!
#4 Jane Eyre by Charolette Bronte
Another classic romance story that swept me away and I could not get this story out of my head for weeks! I can't quite put my finger on exactly why it stuck with me so closely, but it obviously is the case for millions of other readers. If you haven't read it yet, you absolutely must. Bronte paints such a vivid picture and an even better love story.
#5 The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer
I HAD TO! Please don't judge me. This book series was such a huge part of my childhood and beginnings to my future of reading. You get it all with this - a love triangle, murder, mystical beings, and much more.
#6 The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
Juicy, juicy reading with an extensive enemies to lovers trope. Cannot NOT love a work driven, intelligent, angsty book. Very steamy but enjoyed the light, funny read with a very traditional romance novel storyline.
#7 The Night Circus by Erin Morgensten
I explored this book at length previously but it is exceptional! Normally I don't like a "magic" book but for some reason this wasn't too magic-y for me, and more so about the love story in an almost dreamlike telling. I love a story told from many different people, which this book has, because it gives a bigger viewpoint into the romance than just the two people involved.
#8 Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Tearful and deeply gripping. I basically sobbed the entire time but I still loved it - still do! SO much thought, care, kindness, humanity, love, and much more in this book. Definitely recommend.
Go outside your comfort zone and give a romance read a try!
